1. Always lock doors and windows

This one seems like a no brainer but is often overlooked. People leave their doors and windows unlocked at night and often times, they even leave their windows open. While this is a good way to let a light breeze in, it’s also a welcome sign for criminals looking to break in. Your best option is to buy a fan and make sure all your doors and windows are locked at night and whenever you leave the house.

2. Carefully plan landscaping projects

Landscaping isn’t something people think about in regards to home security, but it can really help. It’s important to trim bushes and shrubs back from the house so it doesn’t just act as a hiding place for burglars. In addition, consider using gravel in your beds instead of mulch, so you can hear if someone is walking around outside. Also, planting thorny plants like rose bushes near first story windows is a good way to deter people.

3. Plan accordingly when traveling

When you’re planning a trip away, even if it’s just a night, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. If you’re close with a neighbor, let them know that you’re not expecting anyone at the house. Another tip that sounds like common sense it to not leave your garage door open. Certainly, you close it at night and when you leave during the day, but what about when you’re doing work or relaxing in the back yard? If you have tools or other valuables—like bikes or a nice set of golf clubs—in the garage, it doesn’t take more than a minute or two for someone to snatch them and drive away. It might seem extremely inconvenient to open and close the garage if you’re going back and forth from the backyard, but it’ll give you peace of mind and keep your belongings safe.
