If you are friendly with your neighbors, you might also want to ask them to pull your garbage tote out to the street and put it back the next evening. One clear sign that people are away is when there are no garbage or recycling bins at the street when every other neighbor has them out.

3. Put inside lights on a timer.

Putting lights on a timer is a great way to give the appearance that people are home. Some smart plugs even have an “Away” mode, which will randomly turn lights and televisions on and off so it appears like someone is home operating them. Having a well-lit outdoors is also a good idea, especially by installing motion-sensor lights.

4. Lock all your doors and windows.

This one seems like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised by the number of people who don’t actually check to make sure all of the doors and windows are locked before they leave. Take a few minutes to double check so you can have peace of mind while you’re away.
