Planning to Go Away For Easter or Spring Break? Secure Your Home First!
Easter—and Spring Break!—are just a week away and that means it’s time to settle on your holiday plans. Are you heading out of town for the holiday to visit family? Are you going to Disney Land to see all of the new features? While heading out on vacation is certainly exciting, it’s important to have everything in order at your home first. The last thing you want to have happen is to return from vacation to find your house has been broken into.
Want to protect your home even while you’re away? Keep reading for a few ways to keep your home safe while you are traveling for the holiday.
- Keep the exterior of your home well maintained.
- Ask a neighbor to take out and bring in your garbage tote.
- Put inside lights on a timer.
- Lock all your doors and windows.
Maintaining your landscaping is paramount if you travel. You want the home to look lived in, which is why it’s important to mow your lawn right before you leave. You will also want to keep bushes and shrubs trimmed back so the overgrown plants don’t provide hiding spots for burglars prowling for ways into your home.
If you are friendly with your neighbors, you might also want to ask them to pull your garbage tote out to the street and put it back the next evening. One clear sign that people are away is when there are no garbage or recycling bins at the street when every other neighbor has them out.
Putting lights on a timer is a great way to give the appearance that people are home. Some smart plugs even have an “Away” mode, which will randomly turn lights and televisions on and off so it appears like someone is home operating them. Having a well-lit outdoors is also a good idea, especially by installing motion-sensor lights.
This one seems like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised by the number of people who don’t actually check to make sure all of the doors and windows are locked before they leave. Take a few minutes to double check so you can have peace of mind while you’re away.
