Back to School Home Security – Keeping Your Family Safe

It’s almost time to send your kids back to school and while you’re probably thinking about getting all their school supplies together and who their teacher will be, it’s important not to forget about making sure they’re safe when they come home to an empty house. Here are a few tips to make sure that your family is safe when kids head back to school:

Keep a List of Important Numbers

Cell phones make a lot of things much easier, but they shouldn’t be the only thing relied upon. Make a list of important phone numbers and tack it to the fridge or somewhere else that it is easily visible. That should include the police, fire station, your cell and work phone number, the veterinarian’s number if you have an animal, poison control, and any local relatives that would be able to help in an emergency situation.

Make a Home Security Checklist

Children often come home to an empty house, especially older ones that are in high school. Just because a child is old enough to be home alone for a few hours though, doesn’t mean that they’re automatically safe. Prepare a home security checklist for your children and go over it with them. That should involve things like never letting anyone into the house or even answering the door while home alone, keeping all of the doors locked, turning on the outside lights, setting the home alarm system, and letting you know that they made it home safely.

Install a CCTV System

Another way to protect your children is to keep an eye on them even when you’re not home. By installing a CCTV system with cameras inside and outside of the house, you can see what’s going on inside and around your home. This is a great way to add another layer of protection to your home, while also giving you peace of mind. Plus, if your kids know you could be watching them, they’re more likely to follow the rules you’ve set.

Curb the Dangers of Curiosity

Sometimes curiosity gets the best of kids, especially when they’re bored. When children are bored and looking for something to do, they sometimes explore areas of the home known to be “off limits” when a parent is home. The last thing you want to happen is them getting their hands on something they shouldn’t, like prescription drugs, alcohol, or weapons. If you have anything like that in the home, it is important to make sure that it is locked up properly. Gun safes are a necessity for gun owners, and liquor should be stashed in locked cabinets that children cannot get access to.
