How to Keep Your Home Safe While You Are Away on Vacation

The summer months are a great time to plan family vacations.  The kids are out of school, the weather is great, and there’s an open road ahead. However, by leaving on vacation you may be putting your home at increased risk for burglary. If you are worried about keeping your home safe while you are away, here are a few tips to follow:

1. Keep Your Lawn and Home Maintained

One of the biggest giveaways that no one is home, is if your home does not look well-maintained. Are all of your neighbor’s lawns nicely mowed, but yours hasn’t been done in over a week? Is everyone else’s garbage cans out at the end of the driveway? These are little tells that can alert a burglar that no one is home. Consider asking someone to mow at least your front lawn, and see if a family member or neighbor would be willing to bring your garbage can to an from the curb on garbage day.

2. Let a Neighbor Know You’ll Be Gone

Your neighbors are a good line of defense against burglars. If you have a good relationship with them, let them know that you will be out of town. Inform them if you’re going to have someone stopping by to check on the house, or if no one should be there. If they see someone creeping around the house that doesn’t belong, they’ll know to call the police.

3. Light it Up

Burglars like to get in and out quickly, without anyone seeing them. That’s why having motion sensor lights, or a well-lit exterior acts as a deterrent for burglars. Keeping interior lights on a timer is also a good way to keep would-be burglars at bay. This can simulate someone being home and the last thing robbers want is to run into people at a home they are robbing.

4. Install High Security Locks

While the measures above are great for keeping burglars out, keeping your home buttoned up is also important. Be sure to lock all windows and doors before you leave. Keeping entry points secure is critical. If your locks seem flimsy and you want to bolster your home security, high-security locks are also a great idea.
