Ways to Improve the Security of Your Commercial Building

When you are running a business, your entire livelihood can be wrapped up in one building or facility. It doesn’t matter whether you are running a retail store or a high tech cyber security firm, you need to keep the contents of your business safe. The last thing you want to have happen is someone illegally entering the premises to steal or vandalize your property. There are many ways to prevent this, but here a few tips to consider when you are assessing the security of your commercial property:

  1.  Keep File Cabinets Locked
  2. No matter what type of business you are running there will be sensitive documents housed somewhere. If these files fall into the wrong hands, whether its personal information or information that could damage your competitive threat in the market place, your business could suffer severely. That is why it is important to ensure that your filing cabinets can be locked properly. Keeping storage cabinets, filing cabinets and even mailboxes locked can protect files.

  3.  Install CCTV Systems
  4. Another way to protect your business is to keep an eye on what is happening around the clock. You might not have a specialized security guard sitting around watching the cameras 24/7, but with a CCTV system, you can at least look back on the tapes should an incident occur. Additionally, even the presence of cameras along exterior walls can deter would-be criminals from trying to enter the building.

  5. Utilize Access Control Systems & Electronic Locks
  6. Electric locks that are controlled by computers and access control systems are another way to secure your facility. These types of locks are much safer than normal keyed locks, because they cannot be picked. In addition, keycards cannot be duplicated, which means that employees can’t grant others access either.

  7.  Install Buzzers, Panic Bars and/or Peepholes
  8. You never want to experience an emergency at your commercial facility, but sometimes this cannot be avoided. With emergency and fire panic hardware installed throughout the building, you can help protect the people and documents within. Panic bars and peepholes are also another method to ensuring the safety of the buildings occupants. Allowing your employees to alert authorities of dangerous or illegal activity will make them feel safer and can even enhance productivity.
