Keep Your House Secure This Summer

Keep Your House Secure This SummerKeeping your home and family safe are very important. It might seem overwhelming, but there are steps that you can take in almost every aspect of your life to secure your home. One of the ways you can keep your home safe this summer, is through landscaping. Just follow these tips to improve your home security as you start up your yard work.

  1. Have Good Lighting
  2. Burglars like to sneak up to homes unseen, which is why they either enter homes at night when it is dark, or in broad daylight often posing as a blue collar worker. If you install attractive lighting around your home and throughout your landscaping, you can scare burglars off before they ever attempt to enter your home. Motion sensor lights are a great addition, because they will alert you that something is moving around outside.

  3. Limit Hiding Spots
  4. When you are planning out what type of bushes or shrubs to plant around your home, you want to keep in mind that limiting hiding spots is important for deterring potential burglars. Hedges that run along fences, and privacy hedges are a nice feature, but it is important that you are able to see around them. Another option, would be patio curtains that provide privacy from neighbors when you are outside, but can be withdrawn when you are away so a full view of your yard is visible.

  5. Add Deterrents
  6. If you are dead set on placing shrubs and bushes close to your house, consider making them thorny bushes or even patently thick so would-be burglars cannot easily navigate through them. Also, consider using gravel instead of mulch or dirt around your home. Not only is gravel cheap, but it is also noisy and will give you a heads up that someone is prowling about.

  7. Upkeep Your Landscaping and Yard
  8. As summer goes on, it is important to regularly maintain your lawn and landscaping. If you shrubs get out of hand and your grass gets very long, burglars may suspect that you are on vacation and try to break in. If you’re going away or are simply too busy to maintain your lawn, consider hiring someone to help.
