Originally known as North Ontario, Upland CA has had its current name since 1906. It takes this name from the fact that the city is located at the foot of the highest portion of the San Gabriel Mountains. Upland’s Foothill Boulevard echoes the route that indigenous peoples, Spanish settlers, and finally American settlers traversed along the base of the San Gabriel Mountains for hundreds of years. Another well-known street in Upland CA, Euclid Ave, was created in the late 1800s and used to be served by a donkey-drawn trolley. The completion of Interstate 10 in the 1950s brought Upland CA firmly into the modern era. Today you can learn about Upland’s history at the local Cooper Regional History Museum, or just view the historic buildings in Upland’s downtown.
