Keeping Your Building Safe for Employees & Customers

When you own and operate a commercial office or building, it is important to keep it—and the occupants—safe at all times. Often in the news, you hear about building owners that neglect the care and security of their building, which can lead to varying degrees of disaster. While you can’t necessarily protect from surprise acts of nature, there are actually many steps you can take to shore up your security. This protects not only the people in your building, but it also protects you from legal issues down the road.

Here are a few things to consider when looking at the safety of your building and its occupants:

Fire Extinguishers & Alarms

This one is really a no brainer. Fire codes are nothing to scoff at. You should check your local codes and be sure that your building is up to code. These codes will specify how many fire extinguishers your building should have and even where they should be placed. Having extinguishers isn’t enough. You will also need to check them regularly to ensure that they are not expired. If you want to up the ante even more, RBM Lock & Key installs state of the art emergency and fire panic hardware!

Escape Routes & Exits

Another thing to keep in mind is the escape routes and exits offered in your building. This too will be clarified in your local building codes, but most specify that you need 1 exit per 50 people in the building. All exits need to be clearly labeled and their signage needs to be seen even during a power outage. Having emergency lighting is also a must. The last thing you want is to have people falling down the stairs.

Last but not least, you want to make sure that your commercial building is secure. This is an area that RBM Lock & Key can assist with exclusively.
